Duties and Responsibilities:
Genetic
Counselors provide information and advice for people that can possibly be at
risk of having genetic disorders. A genetic counselor meets with you to discuss
the genetic risks that can happen; the counselor can be for you or another
family member. The meeting may follow with a genetic testing. There are many
reasons to have a genetic counselor meet with some of them are:

Have
a family history of genetic disorder or birth defect.
·
Are
pregnant or thinking about having a baby after the age of 35.
·
Already
have a child with a birth defect.
·
Have
an ultrasound test with a potential problem.
Salary: $60,000- $70,000
Education Requirements:
Those interested
in the field must complete a master's degree program in genetic counseling. Due
to the small number of accredited programs, graduate schools often have a
highly selective admission process. Students can prepare for admission with
undergraduate courses in chemistry, biology, genetics and psychology. Schools
may require or strongly recommend paid or volunteer experience prior to
enrolling in the professional program.
